Song Notes
This song was born from my wife’s longtime struggle with fear of fear. The first lines I wrote came to me years ago, while I was away from home, on tour with my band, and while she was at home alone.
Sleeping soundly by herself has always been hard for her, and it started to become even more troubling than usual in her late 30s. Anxiety crept in in new and physical ways, especially after dark, and the adrenaline surges would sometimes keep her wide awake all night. She handled the stress of that season well, always creating beautiful things and ever-determined to "find her way in the waiting"; always knowing "where to find the daylight" before it burned away. I don’t think either of us understood the depth of what she was managing back then.
One night, during a quick phone call before bed, I said the usual:
“Okay, I’m gonna let you go so you can get some sleep," to which she replied in her outwardly cutesy way, "Don’t let me go. Don’t ever let me go.”
It felt more romantic than fear-based at the time, but after we hung up, I scribbled those words down in my lyric notebook and carried them around with me for years. They finally found their place in this song.
“She Knows” is about strength in the storm. It’s about a brave girl who faced her fear of fear night after night so that I could chase a dream. It’s about love that holds on, even when it's afraid.
Lyrics
She Knows
By Kevin Palmer
Verse 1
Every night she lies awake
Waiting for the light of day (to finally break)
She asks when I’m coming home
Because she hates to sleep alone
And I can hear her voice shake
Pre-Chorus
When she says,
Don’t let me go, don’t let me go,
Don’t ever let me go
Chorus
She knows how to find her way in the waiting
She knows where to find the daylight before it burns away
She knows how to say I need you without saying a word
She knows happy, she knows hope, and she knows hurt
Verse 2
Every night she stays up late
Wishing all her fears away (she’ll be okay)
She calls me on the phone and pretends like nothing’s wrong
But I can hear her voice break
